EV-Grid Integration Design for V2G Power Transfer

Widespread integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the utility grid causes congestion problems on the side of user and network. An effective communication network that will be established between EV, electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE, also known as charging station), and utility grid will make a major contribution to the solution of these problems. The purpose of this project is to design a communication infrastructure for the EVSE which is interactive with users and which can communicate with the smart grid in accordance with the current standards, especially IEC/ISO 15118. To demonstrate the bidirectional communication framework, a bidirectional EVSE, EV, and grid communication hardware are emulated and tested using embedded controllers, and a commercial EVSE hardware.

  • Three different senior student groups have worked on the project. Total of 12 senior students have been involved in the project in two years.
  • Vehicle-to-grid communication is realized.
  • Design is tested with Mennekes EVSE and Walther EV-tester
